UPGRADE FROM RELEASE 8.0 TO 9.0

Customers with a current support contract and running any 8.0 release of the software are eligible to upgrade to the 9.0 release of the software.

If your version of the software alerts you to the availability of an upgrade to 9.0, follow prompts to download the upgrade setup file. If you do not receive an alert, contact technical support for the download link.

Pre-upgrade check

Prior to running the setup file, verify free disk space on the volume that holds the installation files. By default, the installation folder is C:\Program Files\DATASTOR. The upgrade process will back up your existing configuration and log files to a folder on the C: drive so ensure you have enough free disk space on this volume, too.

Upgrading

Run the setup file on the server that hosts the software. Follow the wizard prompts to complete the upgrade. The final screen should indicate the software was successfully updated, or provide an error. If you receive an error, contact technical support.

Post-upgrade options

After the upgrade, take the following steps.

1. Click on Archive Manager > Properties and enter user credentials of your backup service account. The software will save these credentials in an encrypted format and use them when you edit or create new tasks or schedules in the software. If you have not already done so, click on the Export Settings tab of the properties window and set a schedule and folder to hold an export of your DATASTOR configuration files and logs. This information allows you import your settings in the event of a server rebuild. You may also enter settings for delivery of a 24 hour checkup report in the same properties window. Click OK to save your settings.

2. Delete each store's purge task and recreate it. (Storage > All Stores > [store] > Store Tasks action.) The purge task uses a new command line syntax and this step will put it in place.

The software will continue to run protection plans and store tasks without taking further steps. However, in order for the software's new fast scan technology to become enabled, the store must be converted to a new store schema. In addition, storage must also be configured so there is a single store per volume, as opposed to two or more stores located on the same volume, otherwise a normal scan process will take place. To take full advantage of performance improvements in the software, take the steps below:

3. If your store was first created using the 3.0  or 4.0 release of the software, do not convert your store. If your store was first created in the 8.0 release of the software, right click the store and select properties. (Storage > All Stores > [store] > Properties.) Click the button to 'improve storage performance'. On the next page, click the button to convert your store. This may take considerable time to complete. However, protection plans will continue to run during the conversion process. Consider converting the store during a time when the storage is not put under a heavy IO load. If this store is either a source or destination store of a copy task, you must convert the second store also before the copy task will run successfully. Disable store tasks during the conversion process.

4. Repeat the steps above to convert other desired stores.
