When configuring tape devices using the “Configure Tape Devices” wizard, you may see an error dialog if there are devices with invalid drivers or that have been removed from the system.
When a device has a name of “Unknown Medium Changer” or “Unknown Tape Drive”, a default driver was not found for the device.
Select the device and click Properties. This will show the windows device property page.
Select the Driver tab and click the “Update Driver…” button. Follow the procedure for your device to load a Windows compatible driver. Some drivers installation may require a reboot of the computer.
After the driver is loaded you can close the dialog and refresh the scan to clear the error.
Alternately, If the device listed is no longer attached to the system you can remove it by uninstalling the driver for the device. Select the device and click Properties.
The Device status text would show that the device is currently not connected. You can re-connect the device or remove the device to clear the warning. To remove the device select the Driver tab.
Click the Uninstall button.
In some cases, this dialog will prompt to review the associated driver software with the device. It is not recommended to remove the driver software because removing the driver software can increase the likelihood of needing to reboot the computer. Click OK to uninstall the device and choose the Scan Again button on the Tape Device Scan page to see that the device has been removed.
At this point you can proceed to the Configure for Vaulting step of the wizard by clicking Next.
Configuring tape devices does a deeper level compatibility test with the devices and associates any non-standalone drives with medium changers. This process will load each tape into the drive but not overwrite any existing data.
Before proceeding with the device configuration please have tapes available to load.
For standalone drives, please have a tape in the drive slot ready to be loaded, but not in the drive.
For tape libraries and autoloaders have at least one tape with a barcode in a slot and remove or home any tapes that are in drives.
The system will load and unload tapes in drives to test the compatibility of the drives.
After the devices have been configured you can see the configuration of the devices and how the devices relate to one another. For example a “Quantum LTO 4 Tape Drive” could be associated with a “Quantum SuperLoader” and that volumes with barcode labels were discovered. A standalone tape device could be configured “LTO Tape drive”.
Some tape libraries allow remote administration of the device through a web interface. If you select a media changer, you can set a management URL for access to a web interface by clicking “Set Management URL” and entering the name or IP address for the device in the Remote Management URL dialog.
Click Finish on the wizard to complete the tape device configuration.
